Welcome to Hood River Valley High School Scholarship Night. This evening we gather to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students, and to express our gratitude for the incredible generosity of our scholarship grantors. Tonight we recognize the hard work of more than 90 HRV seniors.

To our seniors, we hope these scholarships illustrate the support and confidence this community has in you as you further your education. We wish you the best as you embark on this next chapter.

To our grantors, families, and educators, we are grateful for all you do to to support the education and success of these students. Thank you for celebrating with us this evening, and for helping our seniors achieve their goals.

Hood River Lions Scholarships


Hood River County Education Foundation

The Hood River County Education Foundation (HRCEF) was founded in 1991 and is an independent 501c(3) non-profit organization that supports teachers, staff and students in the Hood River County School District. Over the past 35 years, the foundation has awarded more than $2,400,000 in scholarships to more than 660 local students, and over $550,000 to teachers for innovative educational projects through the Teaching Grant Program. Through the Opportunity Fund, the Foundation has provided over $1,000,000 to expand co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for our students, including swim lessons, after school care, athletics, field trips, literacy initiatives, and experiences in science, arts and music. All of our funding comes from local supporters who believe in the organization and its mission. To learn how you can help, please contact us today!

AVID Scholarship

AVID is a college preparatory program that provides academic support and college guidance to historically underserved students. These students demonstrate a willingness to work hard for their college dreams and have dedicated themselves to becoming a strong college student through a robust set of criteria and obligations. Academic, extra-curricular, and community service requirements must be met to continue on the program which boasts a 95% acceptance rate into a 4-year university. The AVID Scholarship Fund is a scholarship generated by teachers and community members who want to assist these dedicated students as they pursue their college dreams.

Beachman Jakku Scholarship

The Beachman family donated funds in the 1990’s to create two scholarships for students who will attend Oregon colleges.  The scholarship recipients must have a strong record of volunteer community service, as well as a high level of participation in high school activities.

The Beardsley Family Scholarship

The Beardsley family came to Hood River in 1946 and has been actively involved in business and community service since that time. Charles (Chuck) Beardsley was for many years a partner with Herschner & Bell Realty. He served on the Hood River City Council and as mayor from 1977-1983. He was also actively involved with the Sister City Program during its initial formation. The community has given much to the Beardsley family, and it is their wish and intent to give back. This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a career in Business or Education.

Bev & Jay Bryant Memorial Scholarship

The Bev and Jay Bryant Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family in their memory as avid sports fans. Jay attended local schools and participated in athletics. Bev was a cheerleader at Hood River High School and was inducted into the HRVHS Hall of Fame. Jay enjoyed coaching and both Bev and Jay were thrilled to watch their own sons play sports through the college level. Their support of sports continued on with watching their grandchildren play.

Board of Directors Scholarships

The Education Foundation Board raises funds each year to provide scholarships for graduates who deserve recognition for excellence in academics, community and extra-curricular activities. Donations to the HRCEF Scholarship Fund and HRCEF fundraising events support these scholarships.

Butch Gehrig Memorial Scholarship

Butch Gehrig was born and raised in the Hood River Valley and grew up in a family of nine children. His love of automobiles began at a young age watching his father work at the family’s business, Gehrig’s Chevron in Odell. He learned from an early age the importance of hard work and commitment to his community. He lived his entire life in the community of Odell. It would please Butch to know he will continue to help young people achieve their goals in life with this memorial scholarship.

Cascade Locks Alumni Scholarship

Alumni of Cascade Locks High School contribute to this fund to assist students who live in Cascade Locks. When Cascade Locks High School was consolidated into HRVHS, the fund did not cease to exist. In fact, many alumni contribute to this scholarship and it continues to grow each year. This scholarship provides awards for multiple students yearly, and also has a second year of funding for those who successfully complete their first year of college.

Chen Family Scholarship

Paul and Mary Chen established this scholarship to honor students who have achieved the same distinction as their two daughters at HRVHS—being elected Homecoming Royalty. This award recognizes not only their title but also their dedication to academic excellence and community involvement. Each year, only two students receive this prestigious honor, celebrating their outstanding contributions both in and beyond the school.

The Cohn Family Scholarship

The Cohn family has established this scholarship fund to recognize and honor HRV seniors who demonstrate academic excellence throughout high school. This scholarship is awarded to a first-generation senior who has consistently challenged themselves both inside and outside of the classroom.

Dick Roth Memorial Scholarship

The Dick Roth Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends of Richard “Dick” Roth to honor his memory and celebrate athletic achievement. In the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, Dick won the gold medal for his first-place finish in the men’s 400-meter individual medley. Dick loved to coach swimming and routinely gave lessons to anyone with a passion for aquatics. He was also a successful high-school water polo player. As such, this scholarship recognizes excellence in aquatic sports, particularly competition swimming and water polo.

Duckwall Pooley Sons & Daughters Scholarship

Duckwall Fruit has amazing employees – the best, in fact. Our employees are the hardest working in the industry, and it is evident they fight for the betterment of their children. For this reason, the Labbe Family created the Duckwall Fruit Employees’ Sons and Daughters Scholarship Fund, and it is always a pleasure to see where these hard-working students take this opportunity.

Eagle Valedictorian Scholarship

Mike and Kathy Oates established this fund to assist a student who has achieved the very best in academic excellence at HRVHS. In the case where several students have earned a 4.0 GPA, the school principal and vice principal select the candidate based on numerous other criteria.

Earl C Koberg Memorial Scholarship

The relatives of Earl Koberg established this endowed fund to assist between 6-8 students, based on the interest earned on the account each year. Earl Koberg owned land in Hood River in the early 1900’s that included the historic Koberg Beach and pavilion that was located just east of Hood River. This scholarship rewards academic excellence, school involvement, and community service.

Henry Lin Memorial Scholarship

Henry Lin was born in Qindao, China and grew up in Taiwan. He taught both high school and college English in Taiwan. He moved to the United States in 1964 and earned a Masters’ Degree in Library Science. He worked at Yale University and then moved to California to teach high school. In 1989, he vacationed in Hood River and fell in love with this area. After retiring, he moved to Hood River and became an avid supporter of musicals and concerts at HRVHS. He found strength and happiness in music and the arts, and he never missed a high school performance. Upon his passing in 2000, his good friends established this scholarship in his name to support a student who is pursuing a future in music or the performing arts.

Hood River Community Service Scholarship

Matthew and Sarah Roth believe that volunteering and community service are vital components of healthy communities. By volunteering your time, you connect with people around you and help improve conditions for all to flourish. This scholarship is an acknowledgement of the value of community service to bond us to each other as we lift up those around us. We are excited to support those students who have given significant time and effort during high school to their communities through service to community groups, nonprofits, churches, and volunteer organizations. We imagine recipients of this scholarship will continue to volunteer their time in college and beyond, preparing themselves for a life rich in service to others.

Isabel Gilkerson Memorial Scholarship

Isabel Gilkerson made a generous bequest to the Education Foundation through the proceeds of the sale of her orchard property in Duke’s Valley. She wanted to help students who might not be able to go to college without financial support, especially students who are likely to succeed in college and who do not receive other financial assistance. This scholarship is awarded to students who come from an agricultural background and/or students who intend to pursue a career in agricultural sciences.

Jason Ashby Memorial Scholarship

Jason Ashby grew up in rural Crown Point, Indiana and was raised at Stone Hill Farm. His early life was filled with 4-H  activities and learning the many skills and responsibilities of raising, and caring for, animals on the farm. Leadership came naturally to Jason, and he helped others succeed by encouraging them to develop their skills, pursue their interests, and overcome those challenges in life that require some extra effort. The relationships Jason fostered on the farm, through 4-H projects, in school helped him learn and succeed. Caring for the people he came to know and learn from in the community became life’s most important connection. It was no surprise that Jason continued to apply that care in connecting the people within his professional life and employer at Cardinal IG Hood River. Jason was an excellent leader and mentor to many at Cardinal, and his scholarship was created to support an HRVHS graduate who is motivated to become a prosperous and successful member of society by furthering their education.

Jeff & Melissa Rippey Scholarship

Jeff and Melissa Rippey believe that a skill or trade can ensure an individual a successful, fulfilling career. It is their wish to help a motivated student realize his/her potential and gain financial success while contributing to society.

Jim Carnes Memorial Scholarship

In 1973, Jim Carnes began what was to become a long career with the Hood River Valley School District. After serving a year as principal at Mid Valley Elementary, Jim was asked to assume responsibilities at the District Office. Over the next 17 years he served as the K-12 curriculum director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He was instrumental in establishing the district-wide English Language Learners program, which grew from just a handful of students to several hundred. Jim truly believed that every child is unique and that every child can learn. During the course of his career, he inspired others to believe the same of their students. This scholarship rewards students planning a career in education.

John & Martha Weber Memorial Scholarship

The estate of Martha & John Weber, long-time Hood River residents, has established a scholarship fund with the Hood River County Education Foundation. The Martha & John Weber fund offers one scholarship to an HRVHS graduating senior.

Kate Mills Memorial Scholarship

Kate Mills was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Portland and educated at Catlin Gabel School and Stanford University. With her family she moved to the upper Hood River Valley in the mid-’70s. Kate loved animals and the outdoors, and was active in the Hood River Valley community, helping found the Columbia Center for the Arts, Hood River Valley Residents Committee (“Thrive”) and Friends of Timberline. For nearly 60 years, Kate Mills was a fearless and untiring champion of Oregon’s natural beauty, especially the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River Valley. Her scholarship recognizes students who are pursuing careers in agriculture, the performing arts, or environmental sciences.

Kyle Wood Memorial Scholarship

Kyle Marin Wood was born and raised in Hood River and graduated from HRVHS in 1992. His interests included electronics, mechanics and technology. After spending time living and working in Alaska, Kyle returned to Hood River in 2003, where he raised his family, and began his 18-year career with Cardinal IG Hood River. Kyle was a respected leader, and mentor to many because he led and inspired with his heart and core values. In 2021, Kyle lost his battle to Neuroendocrine Pancreatic Cancer. He is missed by his loved ones and all who had the pleasure of knowing him and his warm smile. His family finds comfort in honoring Kyle’s life and legacy with the establishment of this scholarship by Cardinal IG Hood River. Kyle would have been proud to have a scholarship in his name, and to provide a student in need the opportunity to realize their life goals.

Marie Asai Memorial Scholarship

Marie Asai was born in Fairview, Oregon in 1923. She passed away in 2012 after living 62 years in Hood River. She was a second-generation Japanese-American citizen who experienced the hardships of the Great Depression and WWII internment. She was a tireless volunteer for many organizations and an outspoken defender of education. This scholarship recognizes a female student who intends to pursue a major in science, technology, engineering or math, and is renewable for up to 3 additional years.

Mary Clifford Memorial Scholarship

Mary Clifford taught 4th and 5th grade in Portland Public Schools for over twenty years. She also served as a substitute teacher in HRCSD for several years. This memorial scholarship honors her commitment and dedication to improving the lives of students through education.

Masami “Min” Asai Memorial Scholarship

Min Asai was born in 1917 and was a life-long resident of Hood River. He returned to the Hood River Valley after WWII, was an orchardist his whole life and became very involved in the Hood River community. He served as Chair of the School Board during the construction of HRVHS, Board member of Diamond Fruit, member of the Westside Fire and Farmers’ Irrigation District Boards, President of Mid-Columbia Chapter of Japanese-American Citizens League, and volunteer fireman for the Westside Fire Dept. He was also appointed to two four-year terms on the Columbia River Gorge Commission by Gov. Victor Atiyeh. This scholarship rewards school and community involvement, academic success and future goals.

Megan Perkins Memorial Scholarship

Megan Perkins was born and raised in Hood River and graduated from HRVHS in 1983. She dedicated her life to music, playing clarinet in the band, singing in the choir, and performing in musicals. Throughout her life she never lost her love for music and performance. She kept this love alive by volunteering for 21 years with the Mid-Columbia Lions Follies, starting as a performer and contributing the last few years as their vocal director. In honor of Megan’s devotion to the Follies, a scholarship was created in her memory by fellow Follies enthusiasts.

Mike’s Ice Cream Scholarship

Mike’s Ice Cream is a local institution that has been serving this community for more than 25 years. In order to give back to the community that has supported their business, the Kitts family established the Mike’s Ice Cream Scholarship to support students who have worked to cross cultural barriers and excel in a language/culture other than their own.

Monte Hull Memorial Scholarship

Monte Hull, HRVHS Class of 1994, loved sports, the outdoors, and making sure everyone that crossed his path became a friend.  Family and friends have established this scholarship to keep his spirit alive and to recognize student athletes from Hood River Valley High School who embody the qualities that Monte displayed on and off the court and playing field, including inclusivity (helping all teammates regardless of skill or ability), sportsmanship (playing fair and with integrity), and inspiration (showing team pride).

Parkdale Elementary Alumni (PTO) Scholarship

The Parkdale PTO established a scholarship for students who attended Parkdale Elementary. Involvement with Parkdale Elementary and the Parkdale community are significant elements of this scholarship.

Parkdale Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Scholarship

The Parkdale VFW chapter closed due to declining membership and donated their remaining funds to create a scholarship. Applicants are evaluated on academic achievement and an essay on “Why the gift of freedom is important to me”.

Phil Brady Memorial Scholarship

Philip L. Brady III, Ph.D. (1947-2019) was an educator in Alaska, Oregon and Washington. He taught every grade level K-12, at least briefly, and also taught graduate and undergraduate courses for educators and teachers. In his blended fifth and sixth grade classroom, students said, “I love math!” every day to recognize the critical role that Math plays in many careers. Phil was the 2004 Regional Teacher of the Year, representing southwest Washington state. In the Hood River County School District, he was a Curriculum Specialist and Technology Coach, and directed the Portland State Masters in Teaching Program in Hood River. He was passionate about good teaching, and continued to implement new ideas and embrace new technology for learning throughout his life.

Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Healing Careers Scholarships

These scholarships support students pursuing licensure and credentialing in careers across a broad range of healthcare professions, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, behavioral health professionals and more. These students have been selected not only for their academic achievements, which are commendable, but also for many other strengths, such as a commitment to service, their resiliency in the face of challenges, and the potential to serve people of multiple cultures and languages: to know them, to care for them, and to ease their way.

Ryan Bowe Memorial Scholarship

The family and friends of Ryan Bowe established a scholarship in his memory. Ryan grew up in Hood River, graduating from HRVHS in 1995. He loved the valley and “ran all over it.” Ryan completed the Sternwheeler Run at the age of 8 and ran his first Hood-to-Coast as a 12-year-old. He co-organized a Hood-to-Coast team of middle school buddies at 13 and participated in cross-country and track in middle and high school. Ryan was captain of the cross-country team at Washington & Lee University and ran regularly as an adult. Recipient must have participated in cross-country or track.

Sally H Connell Memorial Scholarship

Sally Connell attended the Hood River public schools and graduated in 1963. She was a member of the Honor Society and participated in many activities. Sally attended Oregon State, worked for the CIA, earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science as well as a degree as a paralegal. She never lost her affection for Hood River and tried to never miss a class reunion. Learning and education were always paramount interests in her life. Students must show involvement in community and school activities, and plan to attend Oregon State University.

Steve Gates Memorial Scholarship

The family and friends of Steve Gates have established a scholarship in his memory in the amount of $1,500 to be awarded annually to one student. Steve was passionate about athletics, education and community service, and brought a sense of humor and humility to all of his endeavors. Steve was heavily involved in the Hood River community; among other things, he helped start the Dynamos Soccer Club, coached the Cooper Spur Alpine Team, founded the JET (Junior Elite Team) standup paddleboard team, participated in competitive tennis, mentored and employed countless youth as owner of Big Winds, served on both the Hood River County School Board and the Planning Commission, and was Mayor of Hood River. Steve loved giving back to his community and would have been honored to present this scholarship to a student who had similar ambitions.

Susan Kay McCarthy Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Susan’s commitment to education and Hood River County Schools as a parent, volunteer and long-time member of the school board. Susan was raised in Tillamook, Oregon. She graduated from Oregon State University in General Science. In 1980, her family moved to Parkdale where they purchased orchards and raised their three children. Susan served on the Hood River County School Board for eighteen years representing the Upper Valley. She volunteered in the classroom, on the sports fields and at fundraisers throughout her time in the Valley. Her favorite responsibility during her several terms as Chairperson was handing out diplomas to the high school graduates. Students are chosen based on financial need and how education will support their future goals.

Susanna Blake Gabay Memorial Scholarship

In Susanna’s junior year at HRV, she was diagnosed with clinical depression. Persevering despite her struggles, she was co-Valedictorian of Hood River Valley HS in 2007. She was also on the speech and track teams, active in peace work, volunteered with Big Sisters, was named Biology Student of the Year in 2006, and gained admission to the Clark Honors College at UO with a Presidential Scholarship. Susanna was a courageous, inquisitive spirit, who chose to take a path less followed, delving deeply into whatever she experienced. This scholarship is created to honor her memory and to recognize students who, like Susanna, have persevered in the face of great difficulties.

Taro “Tot” Asai Memorial Scholarship

Tot Asai was born in Hood River in 1915 and graduated from the old Hood River High School where he participated on the tennis team. He attended 2 years of college and then served four years in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to the family orchard in Hood River which his family still operates.

Ted Webber Memorial Scholarship

Ted Webber was born and raised in Hood River and taught at May Street School for most of his teaching career.  When Ted passed away in 1996, a memorial scholarship was established with the first two gifts of $250 each awarded in 1997.  Through contributions, fund raising, the support of the May Street PTO, and partnership with the Hood River County Education Foundation, the spirit and tradition of the Ted Webber Scholarship remains strong.

Barbara and Chris Nelson through their Ten for Tomorrow fund are excited to offer grant awards to a student to continue their educational journey beyond high school.

 Hood River 4-H Association Scholarship

The Hood River 4-H program seeks to promote positive youth development in those aged 5-19 through mentorship and learning engagement. The 4-H Association established a scholarship to support senior participants as they began their post-secondary education. The successful candidate was required to have completed projects in multiple areas, demonstrated leadership in many capacities, and participated in various acts of citizenship and community service.

Lee & Naomi Foster Memorial 4-H Scholarship

Devoted to 4-H and agriculture throughout their adult lives, Lee Foster, who worked with Extension Services from 1936-1973, and his wife Naomi deeply valued the program’s ability to build confidence and essential life skills in young people, striving to instill the importance of the four H’s in everyone they encountered while working closely with leaders, members, and the community to ensure its success; this scholarship is proudly given from the Lee and Naomi Foster Memorial 4-H Endowment to recognize an outstanding 4-H member’s hard work and dedication.

Ralph Kirby Hood River Memorial 4-H Scholarship

Through the 4-H program, Ralph K. Kirby won a $100 Union Pacific scholarship that allowed him to attend Oregon State College in Fish and Game Management. He devoted himself to service as a 4-H club leader for more than 50 years. His son Nick Kirby established this scholarship to honor his father’s legacy and commitment to community service, and to support local youth in their pursuit of higher learning.

Black in the Gorge

Black in the Gorge (BIG), formed in 2022, is an inclusive community group for those who self-identify as Black/African American, Black bi-racial or Black multi-racial and their families here in the Columbia River Gorge! At the core of BIG, is its focus to empower its members through centering, community and joy. BIG offers a scholarship to students who self-identify as Black/African American, Black biracial or , Black multiracial to continue education beyond high school.

Gorham Babson Family Scholarship

This scholarship is for students pursuing a nursing degree from an accredited nursing program. Gorham Babson was a doctor and his wife, Ruth, was a nurse. Both had a strong preference for helping students with aspirations in the healthcare fields.

Hood River Valley LEO Community Service Scholarship

The HRV LEOs Scholarship was created to recognize students who have made a difference through their commitment to service for our community. The scholarship is intended to pay it forward to make a difference in the students’ lives with hopes they too will pay it forward and continue to contribute to their communities.

Johnson Family Legacy Scholarship

The new Johnson Family Legacy Scholarship provides scholarships for students in Hood River County to pursue skilled vocational training through vocational training, two-year college or four-year college.

Larry Sohler Trade School Scholarship

The Sohler Scholarship, created by the family of the late George “Larry” Sohler, is for students pursuing skilled vocational training through an associates degree program.

Laura Douglass Schaefer Memorial Scholarship

Laura Schaefer, HRVHS Class of 2004, loved music and was active in all the offerings of the HRV Music program. Laura especially enjoyed music tours and musical theater. To honor Laura’s passion for music, Laura’s brother and sister, with the support of family and many friends in the community, created a memorial scholarship.

Gorge Technology Alliance Corwin Hardham Memorial Scholarship

In 2015, the GTA proudly launched the Corwin Hardham Memorial Scholarship fund with the first award given in 2016. This scholarship is awarded annually to Gorge high school seniors pursuing post-secondary degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). Eligible students are those from Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, Skamania and Klickitat Counties who are graduating from high school, home school or receiving a GED in the spring/ summer.

Beverly Thoman Memorial Scholarship

Beverly Thoman, a longtime elementary school teacher, was a champion for every child she met. She was always interested in what young people were doing and always encouraging them to improve and learn in whatever they chose to pursue. She and her husband Bob were always ready to help the community and were very active in the Lions Club. Beverly passed away in 2003. To honor her, the Hood River Lions Club provides 5 (five) awards to students pursuing a trade/vocational training program to gain credentials and skills to join the workforce.

Dorothy O’Dell & James Matthews Memorial Scholarship

Every successful volunteer organization has its dedicated members. They show up to work on any project and offer support and encouragement. Dorothy and James exemplified that commitment. When everyone else was gone, they were still there with a helping hand and a smile, both for over 30 plus years. Kevin White Memorial Scholarship

Kevin was a fun, happy, intelligent big brother who sadly, died at age 6 from cancer. He enjoyed fishing, gaming and learning. His family is so thankful to the Lions who chose to honor him with a Memorial Scholarship of 5 (five) awards to students who are pursuing a 4-year degree with strong evidence of commitment to community service and intend to pursue a career in a medical profession.

Patti Simpson Memorial Scholarship

Patti Simpson lived a fulfilling life as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She spent most of her life serving others as a teacher, principal, businesswoman and community leader. In 1998 she was elected and served as the first woman president of the Hood River Lions Club and exemplified the Lions Club motto, “We Serve”. The Hood River Lions Club provides 5 (five) awards to students pursuing a 4-year degree with strong evidence of commitment to community service.

Columbia Gorge Fruit Growers Scholarship

Columbia Gorge Fruit Growers is an association of pear, cherry, and apple growers in the Mid-Columbia region of Oregon and Washington. A membership-based, nonprofit organization, we work together to advance tree-fruit-farming for the future of the land and the people who farm it. We strive for a future where growers, the community, and the land flourish together—sustaining exceptional tree fruit, resilient farms, rewarding livelihoods, a healthy ecosystem and thriving rural communities for generations to come. Our scholarships are for students planning to study agriculture, children of association members, and/or children of members’ employees.

Delta Kappa Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Scholarship

Epsilon Sigma Alpha is an international philanthropic organization founded for the purpose of education, service, and association. The Hood River Chapter has been active in the community since 1967 supporting local causes, St Jude Research Hospital for children, programs for the disabled and veterans. We continue to support our local students by providing scholarships to help them prepare for an ever- changing world.

Helping Hands Against Violence Millie May Memorial Scholarship

Helping Hands Against Violence presents the Millie May Memorial Scholarship. This is intended for a local high school senior who is willing to take risks to make a difference or has been influenced by another person to make a dramatic positive shift in the direction of one’s life. Millie May, Helping Hands’ founder, stood firm to her beliefs in equality and justice. She threw herself into a cause that didn’t exist yet in the minds of the law, but Millie knew it existed behind the doors of many of our very own neighbors. She took the lead in a movement to provide safety for all.

For decades, the Hood River Rotary Club has served our community by providing scholarships to help local students pursue their career goals. The Hood River Valley High School Memorial Wrestling Scholarship is in memory of Don and Ella Schaeffer, Jan Anderson, Benny Kellogg & Abraham Tinajero Villasenor. It is awarded to outstanding student athletes who demonstrate great character, academic excellence, exceptional leadership skills, to honor their dedication to wrestling and the lessons they learn through the sport of wrestling.

Susanna Blake Gabay Peace Scholarship

A 2007 Hood River Valley high school graduate, Susanna worked for many years around the causes of Peace and Justice. The Columbia River Fellowship for Peace (CRFP) recognizes her and her great work with this scholarship. CRFP is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to Peace and Justice for each self, family, school, workplace, and community. CRFP commits to provide emotional support, share information, and promote nonviolent conflict resolution, as well as act to rid ourselves of the global threat of militarization. By making this commitment, CRFP vitalizes the creative potential within all of us and our work to ensure our survival as a living planet. Suzanna exemplified the mission of CRFP.

Ty Taylor Memorial Scholarship

The Ty Taylor Memorial Scholarship was created to honor Ty Taylor who was a long-standing firefighter for Hood River Fire Department and Westside Fire Department who was proud of the Fire and EMS service provided by all volunteers in Hood River County.  Ty Taylor passed away in 1984 and Hood River Fire Department established the scholarship to advance the education of students in Fire, EMS or Nursing services in his memory.  The Hood River County Fire Chiefs’ Association took over the Ty Taylor Memorial Scholarship in the 90’s to make sure that it continues for students in the future.

Waucoma Bookstore Literary Scholarship

For the last 30 years, the Waucoma Bookstore Literary Scholarship has been awarded to students who exhibit exceptional writing abilities and a passion for reading. Students submit a portfolio of their writing samples such as essays, short stories, or poetry, along with a personal statement that highlights their passion for reading and writing.
